BONE DENSITOMETRY

A DEXA Double Site scan evaluates bone mineral density (BMD) at two critical skeletal regions, typically the lumbar spine and hip. These areas are most prone to osteoporotic fractures and provide a comprehensive overview of bone health. The scan uses dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, a safe and low-radiation method. It takes approximately 15–20 minutes. The patient lies comfortably on the table while the scanner moves over each site. The results assist clinicians in diagnosing osteoporosis, predicting fracture risk, and monitoring changes over time due to medication, menopause, or other metabolic factors. No special preparation is needed avoid taking calcium medicine before 24 hours of test, and it’s completely non-invasive.

1. Age should preferably be 21 years or above.
2. Stop calcium supplement for atleast 24 hrs before the examination.
3.No barium examination should have been done in last 2 weeks.
4. No CT Contrast should have been injected in last 10 days.
5. No radio isotope study should have been done in last 1-2 weeks
6.Vertebroplasty may affect results.
